This paper reviews improvements in the understanding of firernhazards and protection in offshore structures since the PiperrnAlpha disaster in 1988. Important new knowledge on firerndevelopment, spread and escalation have come about throughrna number of industry sponsored initiatives, which have alsorndemonstrated how to control and mitigate fire hazards by goodrndesign and effective protection. The most notable gains inrnknowledge have been in the areas of unconfined two-phasernhydrocarbon jet fires, confined jet and pool fires (compartmentrnfires), and understanding the value of area deluge for firernmitigation.
