The Terra Nova Oilfield located offshore Newfoundland, Canada, isrncurrently under development according to a subsea layout with 4rn“drill” centres and a floating production storage and offloadingrn(FPSO) vessel. First Oil is planned for mid 2001. The base casernreservoir development requires a total of 24 development wells plusrnflexibility to develop additional upside potential. Reservoir flexibilityrnmanagement requires waterflood and gas injection capability. Thernoptions of changing to water-alternating-gas (WAG) later in field lifernas well as converting certain producers to injectors are also a featurernof the reservoir management plan. The development plan requiresrnthat 6 wells be pre-drilled prior to the arrival of the FPSO vessel.rnResults from these wells have confirmed the vertically layeredrnreservoir and the need for horizontal as well as vertical and highlyrndeviated wells. The presence of faults that potentially mayrncompartmentalize the reservoir has resulted in a development planrnwhere the early wells are laid out as producer – injector pairs withinrnindividual fault blocks. Each fault block has been designated forrneither gas injection or water flooding. However, as new informationrnabout the reservoir, its geology and degree of compartmentalizationrnbecomes available through the drilling of the development wells andrnearly production experience, the location and type of later wells willrnensure that the all parts of the field are being produced in anrnoptimized way.
