Biofilms that Control Corrosion

Corrosion control using regenerative biofilms (CCURB) was shown to occur with manyrnmetals and the mechanism of protection was investigated. The beneficial bacteria were also engineered tornsecrete antimicrobial compounds that kill otherwise harmful sulfate-reducing bacteria, and bacteria havernbeen engineered to secrete general corrosion inhibitors. Preliminary tests on mild steel at Amergen’srnThree Mile Island Nuclear Station show that CCURB is possible in real plant environments, not just inrncarefully controlled laboratory environments.
