Second Avenue Subway Project, New York: Design and Construction of the 96th Street Station

Phase 1 of the Second Avenue Subway is a $4.4 billion project. The first phase will consist ofrn3 new stations, one refurbished station, and TBM tunnels connecting the stations. Of the three new stations, 2rnare mined (72nd St. and 86th St.), and the 96th St. Station is a cut–and–cover station located on the upper eastrnside of the borough of Manhattan in New York City.rnThis paper will discuss the design, planning, and construction of the 1500 foot long station at 96th Street.rnIt will cover: slurry wall design and construction; temporary bracing and excavation, instrumentation andrnbuilding monitoring; waterproofing; planning of entrance locations and ancillary buildings, and other aspectsrnof building a cut-and-cover station in a densely populated urban environment.
