A Tale of Two Cities: Case Study on the Performance of Various Pipe Bursting Materials

The Charter Township of Brownstown and City of Taylor in southeast Michigan recently completed significantrncapital improvements including several projects which utilized pipe bursting methods to extend the service life ofrntheir aging cast iron and asbestos-cement water mains. Although the same Contractor concurrently performed thernwork for both municipalities, the Owners had distinct preferences for the type of pipe materials that would be usedrnto ensure the long term integrity of their water supply network. Two types of lining materials, C906 HDPE SDR11rnand Fusible C900 DR18 Pressure Class 235 PVC with butt fused joints and restrained mechanical joint fittings werernutilized to successfully rehabilitate approximately 89,400 Lf of aging water mains ranging from 6 to 12 inches inrndiameter. This paper discusses the types of fittings, saddles, connections, pipe fusion, and service tie-ins that werernused and compares the pipe material strength, durability, and performance on these projects.
