The cataphoresis phenomenon of T8-4ft FL lamp systems with HF ballasts was analyzed in relation to two definitive parameters; the coldest tube wall temperature T_c and superimposed DC voltage component V_(DC). This has clarified the critical cataphoresis outbreak conditions, given by the equation V_(DC)= 0.56 T_c - 43. In addition, through experiments on the lamp burning hours to the cataphoresis outbreak, the ballast design requirement of less than V_(DC) 2 V is proposed as an actual suppression measure against the cataphoresis phenomenon in the fields.
