In the past decades maintenance costs of hydraulic structures and especially of lock doors have increased considerably due to the more restrictive environmental government regulations. In this light, it is interesting to use maintenance friendly designs and materials. Most of the alternative materials are more expensive than commonly used carbon steel. Thus, to reduce the total costs, a substantial reduction in maintenance costs is necessary. Maintenance free or maintenance friendly materials are, for example, aluminium, fiber reinforced plastics and stainless steel. In this study, the application of stainless steel for a lock door was considered and a totally new design concept has been developed. For the new design, circular hollow sections in combination with curved plates in stainless steel were used. The smooth shapes reduce the possibility of corrosion and result into less maintenance.
