The authors have developed a process model-based operator advisor (PMOD) for abnormal incidents induced by the performance deterioration of aged devices for a boiling water reactor (BWR). The purpose of the PMOD is to support operators in their decision-making on countermeasures and to prevent magnification of anomalies, by detecting them at an early stage. The PMOD consists of four functions: anomaly detection, primary diagnosis, detailed diagnosis and decision-making support. After the verification test using a full-scope plant simulator, experienced operators and technical staff carried out a validation test through cooperative participation. The results of a questionnaire survey of the operators and technical staff who participated in the validation test indicated that the PMOD could offer effective information to operators in the case of abnormal incidents.
