Both MGP site owners and the regulatory community are rapidly developing interest in siturnchemical oxidation (ISCO) as a potential, cost effective remediation technology for MGPrnimpacted soils and ground water. Ish, Inc. obtained and administered funding from arnconglomerate of utility companies to develop and implement a comprehensive bench-scale studyrnon the applicability of Fenton's reagent and catalyzed persulfate to destruct MGP residuals onrnsoils. This presentation will provide the significant findings of the persulfate studies performedrnfor Ish, Inc. by XDD in conjunction with Umass-Lowell.rnPersulfate was determined to potentially be a very effective oxidant for the destruction ofrnboth the BTEX and PAH components of MGP residuals. An additional significant finding thatrnwill be discussed in the presentation is the impacts of soil sorption / desorption properties onrnoxidant effectiveness and selection. Desorption and dissolution of the PAH constituents, evenrnunder the enhanced rates created in the presence of an oxidant, are relatively slow processes andrnmust be considered in the design and application of ISCO at MGP sites. These physical -rnchemical characteristics also limit the cost effectiveness and practicality of the application ofrnISCO for DNAPL pools of significant thickness.
