A comprehensive research program is underway at the University of Ottawa on seismic retrofit methodologies for RC structures. The scope includes external transverse prestressing and fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) jacketing of concrete columns; lateral bracing of masonry infill walls by FRP sheets or steel strips; and the use of smart structure technology. The results indicate that the transverse prestressing of columns improves shear capacity, promoting flexural behavior. FRP jacketing of circular columns results in significant improvements in lateral deformability of columns. FRP sheets applied diagonally on infill walls control damage to masonry. Steel strips improve strength and deformability. Active control can reduce inelastic deformations and seismic forces.
