J/PHI suppression in a string model

In the present article we study the influence of the transverse momentum of J/PHI and that of the energy density of the surrounding hadronic matter on the J/PHI-suppression. For this purpose, we model the hadronic matter as a gas of 3+1 dimensional classical open bosonic strings, whereas the J/PHI is described by a 1+1 dimensional classical heavy string. First, we establish the energy density dependence of hte survival time of J/PHI in a gas of hadronic strings in thermodynamical equilibrium. Further, we study the survival probability of J/PHI in a freely expanding, spherical symmetric gas of hadronic strings. We conclude, that our model in its present status cannot explain the observed transverse momentum dependence of the J/PHI-suppression although it describes its energy density dependence qualitatively. Extension for a gas of interacting light strings is in progress.
