Early warning system on the danube river

The Danube Accident Emergency Warning System, a short term priority action of the environmental Programme of the Danube River Basin, was put into operation in April of 1997 as a result of nearly five years of development activity carried out by an international expert group of 11 Danube riparian countries and assisted by EU experts and organizations. The basic reason for launching this program was the significant number of accidental water poluation incidents that occurred in the river system, often having transboundary effects. Growing needs arose at the important water use sites (primarily at drinking water intakes) alon the rivers to get early warnings about such incidents. The Convention on Cooperation for the Protection and Sustainable Use of the Danube also underlines the necessity for such a system.
