As a result of atomic energy development and the cessation of nuclear tests, the problem of waste handling and storage has become an important reality. This problem is especially significant for the Republic of Kazakhstan because of the numerous sources of radioactive waste, including liquid waste. These sources include a total of five nuclear reactors and uranium treatment factories. Other sources include underground nuclear explosions (UNFs). A number of UNEs were conducted in Kazakhstan for peaceful purposes, such as creating oil- and gas-storage sites and conducting seismic research. These UNEs destroyed some geological formations, formed caves, cuased underground waters to overflow, and deposited different types of liquid radioactive waste (LRW). For these reasons, cleanup of the LRW is very important in Kazakhstan. The diversity of LRW types makes it necessary to analyse various adequate approaches to select the appropriate technology for LRW treatment.
