Lidar systems are powerful tools for remote sensing oi atmospheric toxic gaseous species. Today, mobile lidar systems (MLS), based on DIAL-technique (DIAL-Differential Absorption Lidar), are under intensive development, owing to their ability to provide 3D-mapping of pollutant concentration, to present information for estimating toxic compound emission due to individual sources of atmospheric pollution, and to measure pollutant levels at relatively high altitudes over soil level. NFI and SRIPT (Scientific Research Institute of Pulsed Technology) are now working on ISTC Project #240 ("Mobile Remote Sensing System Based on Tunable Laser Transmitter for Environmental Monitoring"). The MLS under development is based on DIAL-technique utilization. In this report the main subsystems of the MLS are briefly described, which include transmitter, scanning and collecting optics, and light detection subsystem and electronics. In the program of atmospheric pollutant field detection special attention is now paid to such hazardous species as elemental mercery and sulfur dioxide. The field experiments are to be performed over the territory of the Moscow Region. Owing to the danger of photochemical smog over urban and industrial areas, resulting in an increase in tropospheric ozone content, detection of O_3 is also a problem of importance. The MLS under development will also be capable of detecting a number of other toxic atmospheric gases and vapors (e.g. nitrogen oxides, carbon disulfide, benzene, toluene, xylenes, etc.). The current status of work on mobile DIAL-system development is also briefly described in this report.
