Modified Solar Still With Floating Wicks

In the modified solar Still developed at J.N.T.U., Hyderabad, the back vertical face of the Still was utilized to a larger extent by extending the basin on this side alone and the input water trickles along this face before entering the basin. The Still gave a maximum efficiency of 32% at a water depth of 4cm. Further improvements were carried out adopting this optimum depth. The performance of the Still, by the use of floating wicks, was tried which increased the efficiency as predicted. The efficiency is increased by more than 4% by the use of 16 floating wicks (optimum number) each of 1/2" diameter and length of 5 inches. A comparative chemical analysis was carried for the water before and after the distillation process and it was found that both the salinity (ppm) & pH value had gone down.
