Metal Dithiocarbamates: A 'New' Approach to 'Old' Technology

Antimony dithiocarbamates (SDDCs) are well known to provide Extreme Pressure (EP) protection in grease compositions. It has now been found by use of either ammonium dithiocarbamates (AmDDCs) or zinc dithiocarbamates (ZDDCs) in combination with the SDDC, less SDDC can be used in the grease composition while still maintaining excellent or exceptional EP protection. These products can be made in situ using a one-pot process. To counteract the corrosive effect of the SDDC and AmDDC composition, it has been found that compounds containing a carboxylic acid group are effective in avoiding copper corrosion.
