Clean, safe, efficient hydrogen and fuel cell vehicles and power generating systems are being demonstrated around the globe, but are still unknown to most people. This paper will look at how media can be an effective means of conditioning the market, stimulating investment and creating a demand for new technologies. We will share Hydrogen 2000 's experience as a result of our media product successes, and discuss new opportunities to increase public support of the hydrogen option. Hydrogen 2000, Inc., an educational nonprofit organization, was formed in 1995 by a unique partnership of scientific and media experts. Its mission: to build constituencies for a transition to a sustainable energy economy that will eliminate the major sources of air and water pollution, greenhouse gases, and environmental degradation. This vision has proven to be an effective means of building public awareness and creating constituencies so that hydrogen will be given serious consideration as a component of our energy future. In partnership with its sponsors and in collaboration with hydrogen industry and research organizations, Hydrogen 2000 has produced and distributed videos and publications with a common underlying message: that hydrogen should be considered as a fuel of choice for the 21st century, because it's clean, sustainable, and may be produced from a variety of energy resources―it will simply be better than what we now have. Through our products, this message has been delivered to mass audiences around the world via broadcast in more than six languages and in presentations in classrooms and boardrooms. Developers of hydrogen and fuel cell technologies have also used them in presentations to educate potential investors.
