Development of clayey water interception material in a coastal disposal site

Many coastal disposal sites have been built by reclaiming soft ground along the coast. For this reason, water interception materials used in impervious seawalls at such disposal sites need to be highly workable at these locations and flexible enough to behave in accordance with ground movements, as well as being impervious and economical. Further, these materials must endure underwater lor a long period of time. Directing our attention to the high impermeability of marine clay generated in dredge work, we have endeavored to develop a water interception material based on marine clay. In this study, we conducted several tests, including a consolidation test and a vane shear lest. This was to examine, in terms of soil mechanics, the material properties of a clayey transmutable water interception material produced by adding bentonite and sodium silicate to marine clay. The study has confirmed that the water interception material under discussion maintains its ability to conform flexibly to ground transformation, while satisfying a required coefficient of permeability. In this study, we also propose a special impervious seawall system using this water interception material. A model was produced based on this seawall system to conduct a permeability test, which has proved the same system to be highly effective.
