In current telecommunications systems optical fibre is used as anpassive transmission medium, but by doping the core of the fibre it isnpossible to facilitate optical interactions and thus construct opticalndevices such as amplifiers and switches. The author reviews recentndevelopments in this field, describing first, work on optical amplifiersnfabricated from erbium-doped and highly germania-doped silica fibre,nfollowed by an account of the fabrication of fibres with enhancednoptical nonlinearity for routing and switching applications
