It is virtually impossible to recover all nonaqueous-phase liquid (NAPL) contamination from the subsurface as a separate-phase liquid using free-product recovery. Usually trapped NAPL pools and ganglia remain as sources of groundwater contamination. As a result, NAPL remediation techniques are dependent on transfer of compounds from the NAPL to another more mobile phase, such as dissolution into the aqueous phase. NAPL pool characteristics make it even more important to understand the dissolution process and how to maximize it during remediation[1].
