Full-scale design and operation of an oily wastewater treatment system

An aluminum company in West Virginia uses an oil-water emulsion in their rolling mill process for lubrication and cooling. In the past, the company collected the oily-waste into two lined waste ponds with a combined holding capacity of 5 million gallons. Separation of the oil-water mixture occurred as emulsifiers in the metal working fluid degraded. Free oil was skimmed from the pond surface resulting in a pond effluent that contained between 0.2 and 1.0
