Microwave-assisted magnetic recording is simulated using write heads and spin torque oscillators (STO) with three different magnetic spacings. Single phase and ECC media were optimised for use with each magnetic spacing. Bits written on ECC media had straighter transitions and higher average bit magnetisation than bits written on single phase media. As the magnetic spacing increased the recording performance of ECC media optimised at a lower soft layer K_u to hard layer K_u ratio. When the magnetic spacing was 14.5 nm it was difficult for the STO to write clear bits on the media.
