This paper compares the performance of the conventional unified power quality conditioner and open unified power quality conditioner energized by lithium ion battery based on the Volt Ampere rating, total harmonic distortion, phase jumping mitigation points of view. Many sensitive loads affected not only by the voltage sag but also by the variation in phase angle so that a pre-sag compensation method is used. A comparison between the two configurations shows that open unified power quality conditioner requires lower rating for semiconductor switches in the cases of balance and unbalance voltage sag compensation as well as phase jumping elimination and harmonics minimization.
