Quality control of UHPC by using non-destructive ultrasonic testing methods

UHPC has a very dense micro structure, which possesses high compressive strength and deformation resistance. It has an excellent load capacity, as well as a high resistance to the penetration of liquids and gases. Such high performance building materials inevitably require efficient and reliable test and quality control procedures, because the high loaded cross sections are not suitable for destructive investigation. The non-destructive ultrasonic testing method is very well suited to the investigation of UHPC, because of its fine grained components and its homogeneous structure. Due to this, ultrasonic frequency ranges >1MHz can be used. Using highly frequent probes results in a much higher resolution, and therefore a higher reliability of examinations and quality control of UHPC. On different UHPC samples it could be shown that the ultrasonic inspection can be used efficiently to detect structural changes within the framework of quality control or material research.
