Crowdfunding of Science and Open Data: Opportunities, Challenges, and Policies

The phenomenon of crowdfunding, in the last two decades, has gained ever increasing success and application, to the point of obtaining the attention of the European institutions, with the proposal of a Regulation aimed at providing a legal framework, in order to promote its growth. Crowdfunding has also involved the academic world of science, looking for alternative models of research funding. Crowdfunding of science, however, due to its peculiar characteristics, would require specific regulatory provisions that call for further analysis. First and foremost, this is a consequence of the link with the issue of Open Data and the communication to the backers of the research results.
