Part Ⅰ compares three standards for glazing design: 1) 2005 Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures, ASCE 7-05; 2) 2010 Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures, ASCE 7-10; and 3) 2008 International Code Council /National Storm Shelter Association Standard for the Design and Construction of Storm Shelters, ICC 500-08. Part Ⅱ examines glazing performance under ASCE 7 and ICC 500-08 requirements. Part Ⅲ is about glazing protections versus hurricanes and tornadoes. Conclusions of this paper are 1) fenestration products, tested with allowable strength design are similar for ASCE 7-10 or ASCE 7-05, namely Cat 3 hurricane protection, 2) fenestration products, tested with allowable stress designs, may fail at ultimate wind speeds, 3) ASCE 7, both 2005 and 2010, do not protect against tornadoes, 4) glazing for essential facilities, should upgrade essential facility products to meet shelter standards and 5) glazing products can be designed to meet shelter standards.
