Influence of Existing Building Codes on the Existing Building Renovation: A Case Study of USA

The existing building renovation is a complex process which involves many technical problems and stakeholders. The existing building code is required to supervise and regulate the renovation actions and effects. This paper analyzed the development philosophy for the existing building code and standard. The purpose and significance of the code were clarified from the global view. The situation of the existing building codes and standards in the United States, International Existing Building Code developed by International Code Council, were introduced from three parts: development history, current model existing building codes, and model existing building code process. The code adaptation process and the implementation of the adopted code were analyzed which are the necessary parts for the code application.
