A Report on Graphic Science Education for Town Planning Guideline Making Use of Landscape Survey and Image Processing

In the field of urban study, utilization of images or figures is highly significant as rules and guidelines about urban study described by text are difficult to understand. Appropriate images and figures can help understanding content of them. As graphic science education in Osaka City University is placed as design language in which students can learn the knowledge and technique about utilization of figures, we had introduced the exercise about town planning in which students have to make good use of processed photo images in graduate course also. In 2002, we started an exercise subject for town planning by teaching how to set up rules for town landscape and their rendering images. In the subject, various rules of town landscape were proposed and their rendering images were developed. And making use of them, the direction of future landscape design was discussed actively in the local community development council. From 2006, we developed the exercise making use of image processing technique to enable objective understanding for evaluation of landscape which often regarded as subjective matter. In this paper, we report schedule and content of the subject first. Next, examples of analysis about existing landscape image and future rendering image are explained.
