An Introduction of Geothermal Water-Source Heat Pump Technologies Applied in a Building in Chongqing, China

Energy consumption in buildings in China is facing challenges. The Chinese government encourages the development of new and renewable energy in the built Environment. There is a great trend to exploit renewable energy incorporation within buildings. Chongqing is intersected by the Jialing River and the upper reaches of the Yangtze River. Therefore, Water Source Heat Pump (WSHP) technologies have been increasingly applied in domestic and commercial buildings in recent years in Chongqing. However, the WSHP systems design mainly rely on empirical estimations. Lack of systematic analysis and design guidance of the WSHP impedes improvement of energy efficiency of the system. This paper introduces a number of demonstration projects which applies WSHP for heating and cooling in Chongqing area. The building design has been abided by the Building Design Guide for 65% Energy Saving for Residential Buildings and the Code for Building Energy Efficiency issued by Chongqing local council. The application of WSHP systems in this building can achieve 25%~30% energy saving of the heating and cooling system. The detailed technical design criteria such as river water source annual temperatures, water volumes, water quality and water collection point and transportation have been analysed. Recommendations for the application of WSHP technologies in buildings have been proposed, which could be a useful guidance for WSHP system design.
