Opportunities and Challenges in using renewable energy in Kurdistan of Iraq

Energy is one of the important aspects to be considered in the development for Iraq. Most of the cities and towns in Kurdistan of Iraq (KOI) obtain electricity from generators (of fossil fuel). Dependence on these generators is not healthy, due to air, and noise pollution. Government of KOI does not want to be only dependent on fossil fuel to generate electricity. One of the ways to divert the dependence is to use the alternative and renewable energy resources (RER), such as solar and hydroelectric energy. Most parts of KOI enjoy large amounts of solar radiation. The mean daily sunshine, for KOI varies from about 9.5 hours in December to about 14.5 hours in June. This paper elaborates the current energy scenario of KOI along with some introduction on prospective RER, and their applications. This paper presents some details about these activities, and analysis and classification of RER in KOI.
