At project inception a business case is put forward for undertaking development of a new build project or refurbishment of an existing building. Common business case drivers include that the current building is no longer fit for purpose and/or has high maintenance and operational costs. This paper will focus on projects within the further education sector as the design of these buildings has a significant impact on building users. The delivery of such complex projects is generally managed by a client who will only undertake this exercise once, therefore by undertaking Post Occupancy Evaluation (POE) lessons can be learned for not only the education sector but other sectors; such as the Health sector. POE is delivered over three stages up to five years post project handover at the following recommended timescales: Operational Review 3 - 6 Months; Functional Performance Review 12 - 18 Months; Strategic Review 3 - 5 Years. The findings within this paper have been derived following post occupancy evaluation of fifteen further education projects with particular focus on the impact of decisions made in the design of thermal comfort systems and lighting levels for building occupants.
