A case study of the effect of insulation materials on HVAC energy consumption

As fuel cost rises and environmental concern grows, a more-efficient energy conversion and utilization technologies become cost-effective. Saving money on energy bills is attractive to businesses, industries, and individuals alike. Customers, whose energy bills use up a large part of their income, and especially those customers whose energy bills represent a considerable fraction of their company's operating costs, have a strong motivation to initiate and continue an enduring energy cost-control program. Several factors affect the energy consumption in commercial sector, such as floor space, location, age, and type of activity. This paper presents a real case study for the effect of insulation materials on the cooling load and its impact on the electric energy consumption. It was found that, in this case study the use of polyurethane insulation materials reduced the total energy consumption of HVAC system by 427,392 kWh / year and also reduced the cooling load by 30% and cool wool reduced the total energy consumption of HVAC system by 339,840 kWh / year and also reduced the cooling load by 23.8%.
