Benefit or Barrier to Rapid Deployment of New Renewable Energy Technologies?

The fundamental policy rationale behind strong intellectual property (patent and trade secret) protection is that exclusive rights foster innovation by rewarding pioneering inventors for their hard work and willingness to take risks on unproven technology. In emerging technology fields, this system often plays out through cycles of lawsuits and licensing by those pioneers. Over time, pioneers recoup their investment through a dominant market position and/or a strong licensing revenue stream while the technology deploys in the marketplace.
