Price of Biomass as Key Factor of Success of Biomass Projects Current State and Projection for the Czech Republic

Biomass co-firing is one of the most flexible and the quickest available RES source at present conditions of the Czech Republic. It can use already existing coal fired power plants. At present it is assumed that at least in horizon to 2012-5 the use for electricity generation in the form of co-firing with the coal will remain as the main factor determining the marginal price of biomass. The operators of the large power sources (power stations, cogeneration plants) use biomass to replace coal naturally only if it is economically viable for them. So the price of biomass in biomass market and green bonus values will play the most important role in investors’ decisions. Green bonuses for co-firing should also reflect long term system plans for intentionally planted biomass. There is direct link between values of green bonuses for co-firing and prices of individual biomass type. The increase of green bonus generates space for biomass price increase (and for potentially higher biomass supply) and vice versa. Future plans for biomass co-firing and biomass utilization for power generation should be consistent with the national strategy for biomass agriculture land utilization.
