A Study on the Social Economic Results of the Rural Electrification Programme in the Brazilian Hinterland

The electrification of rural estates is essential to reduce social-economic inequalities between the urban and rural areas of a developing country, since it brings development and social inclusion. This study presents the benefits originating from the implementation of the Rural Electrification Programme in the State of Tocantins - PERTINS (Project financed by the Japan Bank for International Cooperation together with the Government of the State of Tocantins) carried out in the town of Porto Nacional, between the years 1999 and 2005. This paper is based on the analysis of the results, which show the growth in households connected to the grid for the effective increase in the standard of living of the people who have benefited from the programme.
