Ultra-High Capacity, Abuse Tolerant 18650-Size Lithium-Ion Cell Made With Si Negative for Military applications

The performance of ultra-high capacity 18650-size lithium-ion cells made with a novel Si nanocomposite negative with and without a ceramic surface coating is reported according to the military specification ML-PRF-32052/1(CR) and general industrial standard. The ceramic surface coating on the negative electrode improves cycle life without adversely affecting the rate capability of the cells. A typical cell discharge capacity is ～3.25 Ah at room temperature and more than 2.4 Ah at -30 °C at 0.7A. All tested cells passed the 150 °C hot box, overcharge at 1.5A and 20V, UL impact tests, which indicates that the cell abuse tolerance is very good.
