Fuel Cell Field Trials in Domestic Military Applications

In an effort to reduce operational support costs and stimulate the transition towards alternate fuels the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) is conducting an operational pilot program for hydrogen powered vehicles and support infrastructures in Department of Defense (DOD) applications. The DLA is currently in process to conduct a series of pilot projects at four key DLA/DOD installations. The hydrogen pilot program plans to operationally demonstrate approximately 100 Material Handling Equipment forklifts (including three or more fuel cell power module designs), one hybrid (fuel cell/battery) powered bus, one or more hydrogen powered utility vehicles, four unique hydrogen support infrastructures, multiple indoor/outdoor stationary/remote hydrogen dispensing applications, and two renewable energy source systems as part of the pilot program. The hydrogen pilot program is an "early adopter/demonstrator" program that will be used to help build a solid business case for hydrogen powered MHE and vehicle applications and transition the technologies in DOD as well as commercial applications.
