The demand for pure hydrogen for mobile, portable and stationary fuel cell applications is rapidly increasing. Logistical fuels offer a hydrogen dense feedstock for hydrogen production through fuel processing. Unfortunately organo-sulfur contaminants in logistical fuels pollute and poison fuel cell catalysts, even at part per million levels. In this work, adsorbent based on gold ions coated on silica particles was synthesized and evaluated for the adsorptive desulfurization of a real jet fuel (JP-8), not 'synthetic' JP-8 consisting of isooctane spiked with single organo-sulfur compounds at room temperature. Synthesis, results and adsorption characteristics are discussed.
