Analysis of Sustainable Competitive Advantages Based on Project Safety in Construction Industry

In construction industry, the nature of the high-risk work can result in high accident rates. To be consistently profitable, a construction company must have a clean understanding of project safety and its value. A successful safety program offers significant advantage to a construction company in current competitive environment. This study looks at safety as a competitive advantage. It analyses value chain to determine strategy for competitive advantage. It describes the relationships between accident investigations (AI), risk analysis (RA), and safety management systems (SMS) to support project decisions. Furthermore, Sources of competitive advantage are concluded by the case of occupational accidents analysis in U.S. and China construction industry. Results show the characteristics of sustainable competitive advantages and the contributions of safety. Finally, some suggestions such as governmental support are proposed.
