Robot Knows Best? A Comparison of Compliance with Human and Robotic Coaches

Current U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) and Air Force strategic guidance anticipates fully autonomous robotic teammates operating alongside airman on the battlefield of the future (e.g., Endsley, 2015). It is anticipated that these robots will possess highly developed computational capabilities, allowing them to act in sophisticated roles in mixed human-machine teams. Furthermore, it is expected that these machines will have some degree of autonomous decision-making capabilities, and that humans will consult with and rely on the advice and guidance of their robotic teammates.
