Shifting separation assurance tasks from the ground to the flight deck has formed the basis of new concepts for en-route navigation (in particular, free flight) to accommodate future growth. At the same time, present congestion problems at the major airports dictate more reliable and robust methods to deal with arrivals and departures towards the year 2015 and beyond. Supported by extended functionality of the Flight Management System (FMS), aircraft are capable of following increasingly complex trajectories in 4-D. If these trajectories are part of high-density traffic scenarios around airports, a compromise must be constructed between overall efficiency and adherence to individual user preferences based on a process of collaborative decision making. This paper discusses a route planning and optimization method that can be used to construct such a compromise which schedules traffic on flexible generic route segments using genetic algorithms.
