DEMAND RESPONSE OPPORTUNITIES IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA

The effects of demand response (DR) on the electrical sector will be briefly described. Customer, utility and environmental benefits of demand response will be outlined. The results of over 70 detailed integrated assessments of commercial and industrial facilities in Northern California as related to DR will be presented. Potential demand response opportunities will be presented for energy intensive systems. The described systems include: 1. Lighting 2. Heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) 3. Process Equipment 4. Refrigeration 5. Water and Wastewater Examples of demand response opportunities will be presented for each system. Demand response statistical data for numerous audited facilities will be discussed. Barriers in implementing the potential demand response opportunities will be highlighted. Finally, recommendations to improve demand response program participation will be outlined.
