Hydrogen production from waste and low cost carbon sources using the steam reforming in a PEM. gasification system could be a cost effective process that provides substantial environmental benefits, fuel flexibility, and size flexibility. The analysis in this paper is based on scaling the cost of smaller PEM. systems to larger sizes and establishes the incentive of looking at this opportunity in more depth. Since a high fraction of MSW is renewable biomass (paper products from rapidly growing trees), PEM. technology may provide an economically attractive energy based source of hydrogen.
