Characteristic modes analysis (CMA) provides an antenna's radiation potential with clear physical insights. This paper applies the analysis to show the mechanisms of expanding the bandwidth of a rectangular patch antenna by applying a new feeding structure. Simulated results proved a higher order mode was brought down to a lower frequency and worked with the fundamental mode by tuning the physical dimensions of a new sleeve-arm feeding architecture. The new feeding achieved over 35% of fractional bandwidth from 3.13 GHz to 4.54 GHz, in which and boresight Gain>4.8 dBi.
