Energy Consumption by Cloud-based Vehicle Functions

Cloud computing is a key technology to overcome the computational limitation in vehicles. The focus of existing research works in this field is on the utilization of the cloud's storage and computing resources. In this paper, we address the potential of reducing the energy demand of electronic control units (ECUs) by shifting suitable vehicle functions to the cloud. In consideration of growing electrical energy demand, optimizing energy consumption of ECUs is an important issue. Furthermore, we present a new approach to switch the function execution between cloud and ECU to improve the energy consumption and the time performance.
