The conventional Z-source inverter (ZSI) has the following disadvantages: unidirectional power flow, high start-up inrush current, presence of abnormal working state, and low boost factor. To solve the aforementioned problems, a high boost bi-directional series ZSI with novel switched inductor cells is proposed. The proposed novel switched inductor (SL) cell replaces three diodes in conventional switched inductor (SL) cell of the series ZSI with two capacitors and one active switch, thus allowing bi-directional power flow. Besides, the Z-source diode is also replaced by a full controlled switch. The simulation and experimental results indicate that the proposed boost ZSI has the following merits: high boost factor, soft-start capability, bidirectional power flow capability, and elimination of abnormal working mode under low power factor condition.
