The present research work focuses on the study of vortex-induced vertical vibrations of bridge sections through some basic configurations: rectangular single section, twin boxes in tandem arrangement, and H-shaped section. The main purpose is to identify their susceptibility to this type of excitation as well as to propose an analytical expression that provides a good estimation of the maximum oscillation amplitudes. The excitation mechanisms are described and some basic recommendations to prevent or minimize such effects are given. Numerical simulations of existing bridges, which have suffered from such excitation phenomena, are carried out using a CFD code based on the Vortex Particle Method. Results are compared to those obtained in wind tunnel tests on sectional and full-bridge models. Such methods are gaining popularity in the field of civil engineering because of their growing reliability provided by the implementation of new computational methods and the availability of more powerful computational resources.
