Metropolitan's Advanced Water Treatment Demonstration Facility Implements Innovative Design Concepts

The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (Metropolitan) and the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County (Sanitation Districts) are considering development of a large-scale regional potable reuse program. The Regional Recycled Water Program (Program) will begin with a 0.5 million gallon per day (mgd) advanced water treatment (AWT) demonstration facility located at the Sanitation Districts' Joint Water Pollution Control Plant (JWPCP) in Carson, CA. The demonstration facility will receive unchlorinated, non-nitrified secondary effluent from the adjacent JWPCP and consists of a single treatment train with the following unit processes: Membrane Bioreactor (MBR), Reverse Osmosis (RO), and Ultraviolet/Advanced Oxidation Process (UV/AOP). Several innovative features were incorporated into the design to allow testing of multiple process trains. This testing will provide important insight into treatment approaches for achieving potable reuse from non-nitrified wastewaters to achieve varying water quality goals.
