Anaerobic systems offer an attractive solution for wastewater treatment however require substantial capital investment and are prone to process upsets. To overcome these challenges, a new integrated anaerobic - aerobic technology based on moving bed media was developed to provide a small, cost effective and simple solution for a wide variety of wastewaters. The Dynamic ANaerobic Aerobic (DANA) system combines anaerobic and aerobic treatment in one reactor. DANA was successfully tested in an industrial pilot plant treating wastewater from a potato starch processing plant. The plant reached a Volumetric Loading Rate (VLR) and Surface Loading rate (SALR) in the anaerobic stage of up to 17 kg COD/m~3/day and 38.4 g COD/m~2/day, respectively. The overall COD removal was of 95%. The system showed an ability to work in flow velocities of up to 0.76 m/h. Load fluctuations and factory shutdowns did not cause major upsets to the system. The pilot plant demonstrated the simplicity and ease of operation of the new DANA system.
