Anaerobic systems offer an attractive solution for wastewater treatment however requirernsubstantial capital investment and are prone to process upsets. To overcome these challenges, arnnew integrated anaerobic - aerobic technology based on moving bed media was developed tornprovide a small, cost effective and simple solution for a wide variety of wastewaters. ThernDynamic ANaerobic Aerobic (DANA) system combines anaerobic and aerobic treatment in onernreactor. DANA was successfully tested in an industrial pilot plant treating wastewater from arnpotato starch processing plant. The plant reached a Volumetric Loading Rate (VLR) and SurfacernLoading rate (SALR) in the anaerobic stage of up to 17 kg COD/m~3/day and 38.4 g COD/m~2/day,rnrespectively. The overall COD removal was of 95%. The system showed an ability to work inrnflow velocities of up to 0.76 m/h. Load fluctuations and factory shutdowns did not cause majorrnupsets to the system.rnThe pilot plant demonstrated the simplicity and ease of operation of the new DANA system.
